New Year Ab Challenge: A 30-Day Plan That Lasts Past January
Start the new year with a 30-day ab challenge built to last: realistic goals, a progressive daily plan, nutrition basics and how to avoid quitting in February.

Every January, millions of people decide this is the year for abs. By February, most have stopped. The problem usually isn't motivation. It's a plan that's too big, too vague or too punishing. Here's a New Year ab challenge designed to keep going.
Set a goal you control
"Get a six pack by March" depends on things you can't fully control. Better goals:
- Complete 30 days of core training
- Hold a 60-second plank
- Walk 8,000 steps a day
- Eat protein at every meal
Outcomes follow behaviors. See how to stay consistent with workouts.
The 30-day plan
| Week | Daily core | Habits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 minutes | Drink water first thing, walk 6,000 steps |
| 2 | 10 minutes | Protein at breakfast, 7,000 steps |
| 3 | 10 minutes, harder variations | Cut sugary drinks, 8,000 steps |
| 4 | 15 minutes | Plan meals ahead, 8,000+ steps |
Rest day every seventh day. Workouts: start with the 5-minute ab workout, move to the 10-minute ab workout, finish with the 15-minute core workout. Or let AbBlitz build a personalized 30-day ab workout plan and guide every session.
Nutrition basics for January
After the holidays, keep it simple:
- Protein at every meal (protein for abs)
- Half your plate vegetables
- Water instead of sugary drinks
- Moderate alcohol (alcohol and abs)
- A small calorie deficit, not a crash diet (guide)
Avoid the February drop-off
- Start smaller than you think
- Track a streak
- Have a minimum day for busy weeks
- Plan for the week after the challenge: regenerate your plan or level up
Measure progress
Take a photo, waist measurement and plank time on 1 January and again on day 30. See tracking progress without a scale.
A printable checklist
Copy this somewhere you'll see it every day:
- [ ] Core workout done
- [ ] Steps goal hit
- [ ] Protein at every meal
- [ ] Water instead of sugary drinks
- [ ] 7+ hours of sleep
Aim for four of five each day. Perfect days are rare; good weeks are what change your body.
Mid-challenge slump
Around day 10–14, the novelty fades and soreness or busy schedules hit. This is where most challenges end. Plan for it:
- Drop to the minimum version for a few days if needed
- Change the time of day if your schedule shifted
- Look at your waist measurement and plank time, not just the mirror
- Remember why you started
After day 30
The best New Year challenge is the one that becomes your normal routine. After 30 days, regenerate your plan at the next level, keep your streak going and set a new 30-day focus, such as a 90-second plank or 10,000 daily steps.
