Five minutes sounds like nothing, and that's exactly why it works. A workout so short you can't find an excuse is a workout you'll actually do every day. Here's a five-minute routine that trains your whole core.
How it works
Five exercises, 50 seconds of work and 10 seconds to switch. No equipment, no rest between moves.
Minute 1: Plank
Forearms down, body straight, ribs pulled down, glutes squeezed. If 50 seconds is too much, drop to your knees for the last part. Plank guide.
Minute 2: Crunch
Slow and controlled. Two seconds up, pause, two seconds down. How to do a crunch.
Minute 3: Reverse crunch
Curl your hips off the floor, don't swing your legs. Reverse crunch.
Minute 4: Russian twist
Lean back slightly, chest proud, rotate from your ribs, not just your arms. Feet down for beginners, up for more challenge. Russian twist.
Minute 5: Dead bug
Slow opposite arm and leg lowers with your back flat. A perfect finisher. Dead bug.
Can 5 minutes really make a difference?
For strength and habit, yes. Five focused minutes a day adds up to 35 minutes a week, more than many people manage with "proper" workouts they keep skipping. Research on habits consistently shows that small, easy actions repeated daily are more likely to stick.
For visible abs, five minutes builds the muscle; fat loss still comes mostly from nutrition and overall activity. See how to get a six pack.
Make the most of five minutes
- No phone breaks. Use a timer that runs the whole routine for you.
- Quality over speed. Slow reps make five minutes harder.
- Same time every day. Attach it to something you already do, like after brushing your teeth. See habit stacking for workouts.
- Progress weekly. Harder variations or slower tempo.
Rotate for balance
Doing the same five moves forever leads to plateaus. Rotate between versions:
- Day A: plank, crunch, reverse crunch, Russian twist, dead bug
- Day B: side plank (25 s per side), bicycle crunch, leg raise, mountain climbers, hollow hold
- Day C: plank shoulder taps, V-up, heel touches, bird dog, flutter kicks
AbBlitz lets you choose 5, 10 or 15 minutes a day and builds a different workout every day from 169 exercises. See the 30-day ab workout plan.
When to move up to 10 minutes
When the five-minute routine feels easy and you've done it consistently for two weeks, try a 10-minute ab workout a few days a week.
