HIIT Ab Workout: 12-Minute Core and Cardio Circuit
A 12-minute HIIT ab workout that combines core exercises with cardio bursts. Raises your heart rate, trains every core zone and needs no equipment.

HIIT (high-intensity interval training) alternates hard bursts with short rests. Combining it with core exercises gets your heart rate up and trains your abs in one short session. It's a great option when you're short on time.
The 12-minute HIIT ab circuit
40 seconds work, 20 seconds rest. Three rounds of four exercises.
| # | Exercise | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mountain climbers | Cardio/core |
| 2 | Bicycle crunch | Core |
| 3 | Plank jacks | Cardio/core |
| 4 | Reverse crunch | Core |
Rest 60 seconds between rounds.
Mountain climbers
Fast but controlled, hips level. Guide.
Bicycle crunch
Even in HIIT, don't rush; rotate fully. Guide.
Plank jacks
In a forearm or high plank, jump your feet wide and back together. Low-impact option: step one foot out at a time.
Reverse crunch
Curl your hips, lower slowly. Guide.
Does HIIT burn belly fat?
HIIT burns calories and improves fitness, which helps overall fat loss. It doesn't target belly fat specifically. Nutrition still drives most fat loss. See cardio vs abs and how to lose belly fat.
How often?
Two or three HIIT sessions per week is plenty. More can hurt recovery. On other days, do regular core training or walk.
Who should be careful
HIIT isn't for everyone. Skip the jumping versions if you have joint problems or are new to exercise, and talk to a doctor first if you have heart conditions or high blood pressure.
Sample HIIT abs week
| Day | Session |
|---|---|
| Mon | HIIT ab circuit (12 min) |
| Tue | Walk 30–45 min |
| Wed | Strength or regular core training |
| Thu | HIIT ab circuit |
| Fri | Walk |
| Sat | Strength or sport |
| Sun | Rest |
Two HIIT days a week is enough for most people. More often tends to leave you tired for strength work without much extra benefit.
Scaling the circuit
| Level | Work / rest | Rounds | Swaps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 30 s / 30 s | 2 | Step-in climbers, step-out plank jacks |
| Intermediate | 40 s / 20 s | 3 | As written |
| Advanced | 45 s / 15 s | 4 | Cross-body climbers, V-ups instead of reverse crunches |
Intensity check
HIIT should feel hard during the work intervals: about 7–8 out of 10 effort, where talking is difficult. If you can chat easily, push a little harder or reduce rest. If your form falls apart, reduce intensity; sloppy reps don't help your core.
Combine with nutrition
HIIT and core work improve fitness and strength, but most fat loss comes from a sustained calorie deficit. Pair this circuit with the basics in calorie deficit for belly fat and protein for abs.
Frequently asked questions
Is HIIT better than regular ab workouts?
It adds cardio. For building ab muscle, regular core training with progression is more targeted.
Can beginners do HIIT abs?
Yes, with low-impact versions and longer rest (30 s work, 30 s rest).
Should I do HIIT abs every day?
No. Two or three times a week, with recovery days.
Will HIIT give me a six pack?
It helps fat loss and fitness. Abs show when body fat is low enough.
