The supplement aisle is full of promises: belly fat burners, ab shredders, metabolism boosters. Most do little; some are risky. Here's an honest breakdown.
Useful (with evidence)
Protein powder
Not magic, just convenient protein. Helps you hit your daily target. See protein for abs.
Creatine monohydrate
One of the most researched supplements for strength and muscle. It doesn't burn fat, but helps you train harder and keep muscle. Commonly about 3–5 g per day. It can cause a small increase in water weight inside muscles, which is not belly fat.
Caffeine
Can improve workout performance and slightly increase energy use. Coffee or tea works as well as pills. Avoid it late in the day for better sleep.
Vitamin D (if deficient)
Not a fat burner, but deficiency is common in some regions and affects overall health. Get tested and ask your doctor.
Mostly hype
| Supplement | Claim | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| "Belly fat burners" | Burn belly fat | Mostly caffeine; no spot reduction |
| Green tea extract | Melts fat | Small effect at most; high doses linked to liver problems in rare cases |
| CLA | Reduces belly fat | Small, inconsistent effects |
| Garcinia cambogia | Blocks fat | Little evidence |
| Raspberry ketones | Burns fat | Little human evidence |
| Detox teas | Flat stomach | Laxative water loss |
| BCAAs | Fat loss, muscle | Unnecessary if you eat enough protein |
Risky
- Products with undisclosed stimulants or banned ingredients (regulators regularly find these in weight-loss supplements)
- Very high-dose stimulant "shredders"
- Anything promising rapid fat loss without diet or exercise
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements, especially if you take medication, are pregnant, or have heart, liver or kidney conditions. Look for third-party tested products.
What actually reveals abs
- A moderate calorie deficit (guide)
- Enough protein
- Progressive ab and strength training
- Daily steps
- Sleep
Supplements, at best, make one of these slightly easier.
How to judge a supplement claim
Ask four questions:
- Is there human research, not just animal or test-tube studies?
- How big was the effect compared with diet and training?
- Is it third-party tested for contents and contamination?
- Does it promise spot reduction or fast results without effort? If yes, walk away.
Spend the money better
The price of a month of fat burners often covers a month of protein-rich groceries, a good pair of walking shoes or an app subscription that keeps you training consistently. Those are the investments that actually change your midsection.
