Not everyone wants to lie on the floor: maybe you're in an office, your wrists hurt in planks, you're getting back into exercise after a break, or getting up and down is hard. Standing core exercises train your abs and obliques in the same upright position you use all day.
How standing core work trains your abs
Standing exercises work your core by resisting movement (staying upright while your limbs move or a weight pulls you) and by controlled rotation and side-bending. That's very functional, and harder than it looks if you go slowly.
The standing ab workout (10 minutes)
40 seconds work, 15 seconds rest, two rounds.
1. Standing knee-to-elbow crunch
Hands behind your head, bring your right knee up as your left elbow comes down, alternate. Crunch your ribs, don't just lift the knee.
2. Standing oblique crunch
Hand behind your head, lift your knee out to the side as you bend sideways to meet it. 20 seconds per side.
3. March with brace
Brace your core, march slowly lifting knees to hip height without leaning back.
4. Standing woodchop
Hands together (or holding a dumbbell), rotate diagonally from above one shoulder to the opposite hip. 20 seconds per side.
5. Wall plank
Hands on a wall, walk your feet back until your body is a straight diagonal line. Brace and hold. A great step toward a floor plank.
6. Standing side bend
Slow and controlled, reaching one hand down the side of your leg. 20 seconds per side.
7. Suitcase hold
Hold a bag or dumbbell in one hand, stand perfectly tall without leaning. 20 seconds per side.
8. Standing cross-body punches
Brace and punch across your body, rotating from your ribs. Fast and controlled.
Who it's for
- Office breaks (core workout for office workers)
- Older adults (core exercises for seniors)
- Anyone with wrist or neck discomfort on the floor
- Warm-ups before running or lifting
Is it as effective as floor work?
It's different. Floor exercises like crunches and leg raises load your abs more directly. Standing exercises build stability and coordination. A balanced plan uses both. AbBlitz includes standing options like band and cable crunches, standing twists and lunges with a twist in its library.
Frequently asked questions
Can standing ab exercises give you a six pack?
They build core strength, but visible abs depend on body fat. Combine with floor exercises and nutrition for best results.
Are standing ab workouts good for beginners?
Yes, they're a gentle, accessible starting point.
Can I do standing abs every day?
Yes, they're low-impact. Vary the moves and listen to your body.
Do I need weights?
No. A bag of groceries or a water bottle works for suitcase holds and woodchops.
