Abs After 40: How to Get a Strong, Lean Core as You Age
Can you get abs after 40? How muscle, hormones and metabolism change with age, the training and nutrition adjustments that work, and a realistic weekly plan.

Plenty of people get the strongest, leanest core of their lives after 40. It does take a slightly different approach: more focus on strength, protein and recovery, and less on punishing workouts.
What changes after 40
- Muscle loss: from around midlife, people gradually lose muscle if they don't train for it (sarcopenia). Strength training slows or reverses this.
- Hormones: in women, perimenopause and menopause often shift fat storage toward the belly. In men, testosterone declines gradually.
- Recovery: many people need a bit more recovery between hard sessions.
- Lifestyle: busier schedules, more sitting, more stress.
None of this makes abs impossible. It just makes the fundamentals more important.
Training adjustments
Prioritize strength training
Two to three full-body strength sessions per week preserve muscle and support fat loss. Your core works hard in squats, deadlifts, rows and carries.
Short, frequent core sessions
5–15 minutes, 3–6 times per week. Rotate zones and include stability work. See can you train abs every day.
Respect your joints and back
Choose exercises you can do pain-free. Dead bugs, side planks and bird dogs are back-friendly staples.
Warm up properly
A 3–5 minute warm-up matters more now. See warm-up before ab workout.
Nutrition adjustments
- More protein: aim for protein at every meal; many experts suggest higher intakes for older adults to preserve muscle. See protein for abs.
- Moderate deficit: avoid crash diets, which accelerate muscle loss.
- Alcohol: tolerance and recovery often change; less is better. See alcohol and abs.
- Fiber and vegetables for fullness. See fiber and belly fat.
Sample week
| Day | Training |
|---|---|
| Mon | Strength (full body) + 10-min core |
| Tue | Walk 30–45 min |
| Wed | 10-min core + mobility |
| Thu | Strength (full body) |
| Fri | 10-min core + walk |
| Sat | Sport, hike or long walk |
| Sun | Rest |
Expectations
Fat loss may be a little slower than at 25, and that's fine. Track waist and strength rather than the scale, and celebrate stronger planks and better posture along the way.
AbBlitz works well after 40: choose your level honestly, start with 10 minutes a day, and let the plan progress gradually.
